Liege Airport: the 8th biggest « cargo » airport in Europe
2006 will have been a milestone year for Liege Airport. For the first time in its history, it transported over 400,000 tones of merchandise and registered over 300,000 passengers (406,525 and 307,489, to be precise).
As far as cargo is concerned (+24%) we can take pride in the good health of the " local " operators (TNT, CAL, El Al and Kalita). In terms of passenger numbers (+28%), the growth is explained by the increase in the number of destinations and flights, boosted by the inauguration of a new terminal. The financial balance sheet is equally healthy with between 100,000 and 200,000 euros of profits expected after taxes.
TNT has also brought a new Boeing 747 into operation serving Shanghai (3 times a week initially, four if all goes well) and promising contacts have been made to ensure that Liege airport is represented in the hub of the emirates (via the company Royal Enterprise in Abu Dhabi) and in Vietnam, which wants to develop the import of fresh products towards a European bridgehead (fruit, vegetables, seafood etc.).
Finally, Liege Airport has recently inaugurated 4 new aircraft parking areas (10 between now and the end of 2007) and is set to begin construction on a storage and handling hall of 12,500 mē, half of which will be operational at the end of the year.
